Recommendation 1: Product Integration
By integrating their different apps, Google can get the word out on the usefulness of their lesser used products. For instance, by integrating Picasa Web Albums(an image hosting website) and Google Docs into Gmail, and making it possible for users to send Photos and documents easily from Gmail, Google can create value for their customers by making it easier for them to share information, and thus get them to sign up for Picasa and Google Docs. Similarly by integrating Google Voice(a phone app which manages different phone numbers and with lots of other cool features) and Google Calendar, managing voicemails and appointments etc., can be made easier.
Recommendation 2: New Public Relations Campaign
The “Don’t be Evil” PR Campaign
Don't be evil is the informal corporate motto for Google. Google can undertake many charitable ventures under this banner.
Schoogle - Google can make charitable donations to local underprivileged schools creating more comprehensive computer libraries, and also volunteer, teaching young students about computers and the internet, eventually increasing computer literacy for a demographic that greatly needs this.
OLPC - One Laptop Per Child
Although Google initially invested in OLPC, not many people knew of their involvement.Google should take a more active role in the OLPC program by reinvesting both money and time. Google should try and become the primary sponsor of OLPC and should also create a program similar to Habitat for Humanity where they train High Schoolers in proper technology implementation, and sponsor trips to third world countries for the students spread technology and knowledge.
Recommendation 3: An Advertising Competition on Youtube
The competition would be used to generate buzz about their lesser used products.
Users submit funny 30 second videos displaying their favorite Google products.
This way Google could advertise while still being unobtrusive, laid-back, and fun
